What Is a Community School?
California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP)

Whole‑Child, Whole‑School, Whole‑Community

Community Schools are public schools that serve as hubs of support, connection, and opportunity for students, families, and the wider community. Community schools use a whole‑child approach, supporting students’ social, emotional, physical, and academic needs so every child can thrive.

The Four Pillars of Community Schools

Integrated Student Supports
Health services, mental health counseling, nutrition, housing supports, and other social services coordinated to remove barriers to learning.

Expanded & Enriched Learning Opportunities
Before‑ and after‑school programs, tutoring, mentoring, summer learning, arts, and hands‑on enrichment that deepen learning and engagement.

Active Family & Community Engagement
Authentic, two‑way partnerships with families, local organizations, and community members that build trust and strengthen school culture.

Collaborative Leadership & Practices
Shared decision‑making among educators, families, students, and partners; professional learning communities; and continuous improvement.

Why Community Schools Matter

•Community Schools improve student outcomes: Higher attendance, engagement, and achievement.

• Community Schools create a welcoming school climate: Safer, more inclusive, and supportive learning environments.

• Community Schools build stronger relationships: Between students, families, educators, and community partners.

• Community Schools Expand opportunity and equity: Target resources to break down barriers and ensure access for all students.
